Donate, Sell, or Toss? What to Do With the Things You Don't Want to Keep

Deciding to declutter is the easy part.

The hard part is figuring out what to actually do with everything once it's out of the garage or closet. A lot of decluttering projects stall right here, with piles of stuff sitting in the corner because nobody knows where it should go.

Here's a simple way to decide whether something should be donated, sold, or thrown away.

When to Donate

Donation is the right choice for items that are still in good, usable condition but that your family just doesn't use anymore.

Good candidates for donation include:

  • Clothes and shoes in good condition
  • Kids' toys and outgrown gear
  • Kitchen items and small appliances that work
  • Books and games
  • Sports equipment
  • Home decor
  • Furniture in decent shape
  • Unopened, in-date food

A good test: would you feel comfortable handing it to a friend? If yes, it's probably a good donation. If it's stained, broken, or missing pieces, it's usually not.

Many thrift stores accept most household goods. For furniture, building materials, and home improvement items, look for donation centers that specifically accept those, since not every thrift store does.

When It's Worth Selling

Selling sounds like a great idea until you're answering the same Marketplace message for the fifth time.

For most household items, the money you'd make isn't worth the time it takes to photograph, list, message, and meet up with buyers. Selling usually makes sense for:

  • Bikes, power tools, and quality outdoor equipment
  • Good furniture
  • Exercise equipment
  • Name-brand items in excellent condition

Give It a Deadline

The biggest problem with selling is the pile of "things I'm going to sell" that sits in the garage for a year.

If you decide to sell something, give yourself a deadline. If it hasn't sold in two weeks, donate it. That one rule keeps a decluttering project from turning into a new pile of clutter.

When to Toss

Some things have simply reached the end of their life. It's okay to let them go. These usually belong in the trash:

  • Broken items you've been meaning to fix for months
  • Stained, torn, or worn-out clothing and linens
  • Expired food
  • Toys with missing pieces
  • Old cords and chargers for devices you don't own anymore
  • Soggy or crushed cardboard boxes

Items That Need Special Handling

Some common garage items shouldn't go in your regular trash at all. These often include:

  • Paint and paint thinner
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids
  • Pool chemicals
  • Pesticides and fertilizers
  • Batteries
  • Electronics
  • Propane tanks
  • Old tires

Most cities around DFW have household hazardous waste drop-off programs or collection days. Check your city's website for what they accept and when. If you're working with us, we can take these items for an additional charge. Just let us know about them during your estimate so we can include them in your quote.

Don't Let the Piles Sit

The most important rule of decluttering is simple: once something is leaving, get it out of the house quickly.

Donation bags that sit in the garage for three months tend to get opened back up. Trash bags block the space you just cleared. The sooner things leave, the sooner the project actually feels finished.

That's a big part of why we handle trash and donation drop-offs as part of our junk removal and garage organization projects. You make the decisions, and we take care of getting everything where it needs to go. (We break down what goes into that in how much a garage cleanout costs.)
