Closet Organization in DFW: What We Actually Do During a Closet Reset

Walk-in closet before and after professional closet organization

A closet usually doesn't get out of control all at once.

It starts with a few things hung wherever there's space. Then shoe boxes get stacked on the floor. Clothes that don't fit anymore stay "just in case." Bags and plastic dry cleaning covers pile up. Eventually you're wearing the same few things because everything else is buried.

That's exactly what a closet reset is for.

At Simply Organized Garage, our home organization services include closet organization for families throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Here's what we actually do during a professional closet cleanout and organization project.

Step 1: We Take Everything Out

Just like with a garage or pantry, the first thing we do is empty the closet.

It's almost impossible to organize a closet while it's still full. You end up sliding hangers back and forth instead of actually fixing the problem.

Taking everything out lets us see how much clothing, shoes, and storage space we're really working with.

Step 2: We Sort Everything Into Categories

As items come out, we group them together. Depending on the closet, categories may include:

  • Tops
  • Pants and jeans
  • Dresses
  • Outerwear and jackets
  • Workwear
  • Workout clothes
  • Shoes
  • Bags and purses
  • Accessories
  • Seasonal clothing

This is usually the moment people realize how many black shirts or pairs of jeans they own.

When similar items are spread across the whole closet, it's easy to keep buying more. When they're grouped together, duplicates become obvious.

Step 3: You Decide What Stays and What Goes

Once everything is sorted and visible, we walk through it with you.

You decide what you want to keep, what can be donated, and what should be thrown away. We won't pressure you to get rid of anything.

A few questions that help:

  • Have I worn this in the last year?
  • Does it fit right now?
  • Would I buy this again today?
  • Am I keeping it because I like it, or because I feel guilty about what it cost?

Clothes that no longer get worn but are still in good shape can go to donation, where someone else will actually use them.

Step 4: We Clean the Empty Closet

Before anything goes back in, we wipe down shelves and clean the floor.

Dust, lint, and stray hangers build up in the corners of a closet that hasn't been fully emptied in a while. Starting with a clean space makes the finished closet feel like a real reset.

Step 5: We Organize Around How You Get Dressed

This is where closet organization becomes more than just hanging things back up.

The things you wear most should be the easiest to reach. Everyday clothes go at eye level and in the most accessible sections of the closet. Items you wear less often, like formal clothes or out-of-season items, can go higher up or farther to the side.

Within each category, many people find it helpful to hang clothes by type and then by color. It makes getting dressed faster and makes it easier to see what you have.

Shoes you wear regularly should be visible and easy to grab. Occasional shoes can go higher up.

Matching Hangers Make a Bigger Difference Than You'd Think

A mix of plastic, wire, and dry cleaner hangers takes up extra space and makes a closet look cluttered even when it isn't.

You don't need expensive hangers. But switching to one consistent, slim style can free up a surprising amount of rod space. We work with what you already have whenever possible and will let you know if new hangers or storage products would actually help.

Step 6: We Take the Donations With Us

When we finish, the bags of donations and trash don't stay in your house waiting for you to deal with them.

We haul them away as part of the project, so the reset actually feels finished.

What Does a Finished Closet Look Like?

For some people, it's being able to see every piece of clothing they own at a glance.

For others, it's finally having room for shoes off the floor, or being able to get dressed in the morning without digging.

A good closet organization system isn't about making your closet look like a store. It's about making it easier to use every single day, and easier to keep organized after we leave.
