How to Prepare for Your Garage Reset Appointment

Organized two-car garage with white storage cabinets and a clear floor

Once you've booked a garage reset, a lot of people ask the same question:

What should I do before you get here?

The honest answer is: not much. That's the whole point of hiring help. But a few small things can make the day go smoother and help you get the most out of your project.

Don't Try to Clean It Up First

This is the most common thing people do, and you really don't need to.

Some homeowners feel embarrassed about the state of their garage and spend the weekend before trying to "get it presentable." Please don't. We've seen it all, and we don't judge the mess.

Trying to pre-organize can actually make things harder, because items get shuffled into new spots or into bags and boxes that then have to be sorted all over again.

Clear the Way for the Truck

We'll need space to work and to load trash and donations.

  • If possible, move your cars out of the garage and off the driveway before we arrive.
  • Make sure the garage door opener works, or let us know if the door has to be opened manually.
  • If you're in an HOA with rules about trucks or parking, it's worth checking ahead of time.

Think About What Matters Most to You

You don't have to make every decision ahead of time. But it helps to think through a few things:

  • What's your main goal? Parking a car inside, finding tools easily, making room for the kids' gear, or just getting control of the space?
  • Is anything off-limits? Sentimental items, a family member's belongings, or anything you don't want touched.
  • Is there anything someone else needs to decide on? If a spouse's tools or a grown child's boxes are in the garage, it helps to know who makes the call on those.

Plan to Be Available for Two Walkthroughs

You don't have to stand in the garage with us the whole time.

We'll do a quick walkthrough at the start to talk about your goals. Then, once we've pulled everything out and sorted it into categories, we'll have you walk through and decide what stays, what gets donated, and what gets thrown away. On bigger projects, there may be one more quick check if we uncover more items that need a decision.

Between walkthroughs, you're free to work, run errands, or do anything else you need to. Just make sure we can reach you by phone.

Let Us Know About Anything Unusual

A few things are helpful to mention before the day of your project:

  • Paint, chemicals, propane tanks, or other items that need special disposal
  • Very heavy items like safes, large tool chests, or exercise equipment
  • Pets that might wander into the garage while the door is open
  • Anything fragile or valuable stored in the garage

We can haul away paint, chemicals, propane tanks, and other items that need special disposal for an additional charge. Mentioning them ahead of time lets us include them in your quote so there are no surprises.

You Don't Need to Buy Supplies

We bring trash bags, donation bags, labels, and the basic supplies needed for sorting and organizing.

If your garage would benefit from new shelving, bins, or wall storage, we'll talk about that with you. We work with the storage you already have whenever possible, and we'll only recommend new products when they'll actually make the space work better.

What Happens on the Day

Here's the general flow of a garage reset:

  1. We pull everything out of the garage.
  2. We sort everything into categories.
  3. You walk through and decide what stays and what goes.
  4. We organize everything back in based on how your family uses the space.
  5. We sweep out the garage.
  6. We load the trash and donations and take them with us.

When we leave, you're left with an organized garage, not a driveway full of things you still need to deal with.
