Unpacking After a Move: Where to Start (and How to Avoid a Garage Full of Boxes)

Moving day ends. The movers leave. And suddenly you're standing in a new house surrounded by boxes, trying to figure out where to even start.

Unpacking after a move is one of the most overwhelming parts of the whole process. It's also where a lot of homes end up disorganized from day one, because boxes get opened in a rush and things get put wherever there's space.

Here's a plan that helps.

Start With a "First Night" Box

Before you unpack anything else, find the essentials you'll need in the first 24 hours:

  • Sheets and pillows
  • Towels
  • Toiletries and medications
  • Phone chargers
  • A change of clothes
  • Toilet paper
  • Basic cleaning supplies
  • Coffee maker and snacks

If you're reading this before your move, pack these in one clearly marked box that rides with you instead of on the truck.

Unpack in This Order

Not every room needs to be done first. This order gets your household functioning fastest:

  1. Bedrooms: Set up beds first. Everyone sleeps better, and a good night's sleep makes the rest easier.
  2. Bathrooms: Quick to unpack and used constantly.
  3. Kitchen: Start with the basics you use daily, then work through the rest over a few days.
  4. Kids' rooms: Familiar things help kids settle into a new home.
  5. Living areas: Furniture placement first, then decor.
  6. Closets and storage: Once daily life is running, organize these properly.

Unpack Room by Room, Not Box by Box

Opening random boxes all over the house leaves you with half-unpacked rooms everywhere.

Instead, pick one room and finish it before moving to the next. Seeing even one fully unpacked room makes the rest of the house feel much more manageable.

Break Down Boxes as You Go

Empty boxes take over a house fast. Break each one down as soon as it's empty and keep them in one spot. Once you're done, you can recycle them or pass them along to someone else who's moving.

Unpacking Is the Best Time to Declutter

You're already touching every single thing you own. If you open a box and think "why did we move this?", that's your answer.

Set up a donation box in each room while you unpack. It's much easier to let things go now than after they've been put away in your new home. (Not sure what to do with it all? Here's how to decide whether to donate, sell, or toss.)

Don't Let the Garage Become the Box Graveyard

This is the most common thing we see after a move.

The inside of the house gets unpacked. The boxes nobody knows what to do with go to the garage "for now." Then a year later, the garage is still full of sealed moving boxes, and the cars are parked in the driveway.

A few ways to avoid it:

  • Set up garage shelving early, before the boxes pile up.
  • Open every box, even the ones going to the garage, and decide what's actually worth keeping.
  • Move garage items into clear, labeled bins instead of storing them in moving boxes.
  • Give yourself a deadline to finish the garage, just like the rest of the house.

If it's already too late for that, you're not alone. A garage reset is one of the fastest ways to get your new home fully settled.
