Garage Organization for Families With Kids: Setting Up a Garage That Works

Two-car garage organized with shelving, wall-mounted bikes, and kids' ride-on toys

If you have kids, you already know the garage is where a lot of family life ends up.

Bikes. Scooters. Ride-on cars. Strollers. Car seats. Soccer balls, baseball bags, and a bucket of sidewalk chalk. Plus everything else the garage was already holding before the kids came along.

Family garages aren't messy because parents aren't trying. They're messy because they hold a lot of things that get used every single day, by people of very different heights.

Here's how we approach garage organization for families with kids.

Start With How Your Family Uses the Garage

Before deciding where anything goes, it helps to think about how the garage actually gets used.

  • Do the kids head out the garage door to ride bikes every afternoon?
  • Does sports gear come in and out several days a week?
  • Do strollers and car seats need to move between the garage and the car?
  • Do you want to park in the garage?

The answers decide where things should live. The goal is to put the things your family uses most in the easiest spots, and move everything else out of the way.

Create a Kid Zone They Can Actually Reach

If you want kids to put things away, they have to be able to reach where things go.

Low shelves, open bins, and floor-level spots work well for:

  • Balls
  • Scooters and skateboards
  • Helmets
  • Outdoor toys
  • Sidewalk chalk and bubbles
  • Kids' sports bags

Open bins work better than bins with lids for kids. If they have to take a lid off, the lid usually ends up on the floor.

For younger kids, a simple picture on the bin (a ball, a helmet, a scooter) makes clean-up something they can do on their own.

Give Bikes and Ride-On Toys Their Own Parking Spot

Bikes and ride-on cars take up a lot of floor space, and they tend to end up wherever they were dropped.

Wall hooks or bike racks get adult bikes off the floor. Kids' bikes and ride-on toys can have a dedicated "parking" area along one wall, so everyone knows where they go.

Keep Dangerous Items Up High

Garages hold plenty of things kids shouldn't get into. When organizing a family garage, these should go on high shelves or in cabinets out of reach:

  • Chemicals, cleaners, and pool supplies
  • Paint and automotive fluids
  • Sharp tools and blades
  • Lawn and garden chemicals
  • Power tools

Tall freestanding shelving units should also be secured to the wall. A shelf loaded with heavy bins can tip if a child tries to climb it.

Put Baby and Car Gear by the Door

Strollers, wagons, car seats, and diaper bag overflow are used constantly. They should live closest to the door into the house or near where the car parks, so they're easy to grab on the way out.

Make Room for What They'll Grow Into (and Out Of)

Kids' gear changes fast. Last year's bike doesn't fit anymore. The baseball glove is too small. The baby gear isn't needed.

A family garage stays organized longer when outgrown items leave regularly. A good time to do a quick check is at the start of each new sports season or school year. Outgrown gear in good condition is great for donation or passing along.

Move Adult-Only and Seasonal Items Out of the Way

Holiday decorations, camping gear, and things only adults use can go higher up, farther back, or into overhead storage. That frees up the reachable space for the things the kids use every day.
